3. Southwind Kayak Center

Three shops rent paddle boards for the Newport Back Bay: the Newport Aquatic Center at North Star Beach, Pirate Coast Paddle at Newport Dunes, and Southwind Kayak Center under the PCH bridge. All three are still operating and put you on the water within a short paddle of the bay.

We checked each shop’s own website for its address, what it rents and its rules, and cross-checked launch spots against the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve rules. We haven’t rented from every shop ourselves, and prices and hours change by season, so check current prices with the shop before you go.

Our picks at a glance

Newport Aquatic Center, Newport Beach, CA paddle board rentals

Newport Aquatic Center

The Newport Aquatic Center (NAC) is a nonprofit paddling and rowing center on North Star Beach, at the end of White Cliffs Drive. It sits right at the edge of the ecological reserve, so you launch straight into the quietest part of the Back Bay.

Who it suits: adults and teens who want quiet water and wildlife. It isn’t the place for young kids on paddle boards.

Address1 White Cliffs Dr, Newport Beach, CA 92660
RentsStand-up paddle boards, single and double kayaks
ReservationsNone: first come, first served
ParkingFree
Age limitsSUP renters must be 14+; under-18s need an adult on the water

Rules to know: You sign a waiver and leave a valid driver’s license. Everyone on a paddle board must wear a leash, and renters aged 14–17 must wear a life jacket. One person per board, no dogs on paddle boards (dogs can ride in the kayaks), and no fishing from rental craft. Rentals stop well before closing, so don’t turn up late in the afternoon.

NAC also runs private lessons, and the Newport Bay Conservancy runs guided kayak tours from here.

Pros

  • Launches straight into the quiet upper bay
  • Free parking
  • Leash rule and life jackets for teens make it a safety-minded choice

Cons

  • No reservations, so summer weekends can mean a wait
  • Minimum age of 14 for paddle boards
  • Last rentals go out mid-afternoon

Who it suits: first-timers, families with kids, and anyone who wants a lesson, SUP yoga or an evening glow tour.
