The best paddle board mat for most people is a 12-piece EVA foam deck kit like the Abahub Surf SUP Deck Traction Pad: it covers the standing area of a typical board, sticks on with 3M adhesive, and you can leave out pieces to fit a shorter or narrower deck. If you only need grip in one spot, a cheap trim-to-fit sheet does the job for around $15–20.

We haven’t tested these mats hands-on. We picked them from the makers’ specs, Amazon ratings and whether you can actually buy them right now. Five of the six mats in the 2021 version of this list were no longer listed on Amazon when we checked, so most of this page is new or points to the current listing of the same product.

Our picks at a glance

Do you need one at all? Almost every inflatable SUP already comes with a glued-on EVA deck pad, and most foam-top boards have a grippy top. Stick-on mats are mainly for hard (epoxy) boards with a bare or worn deck, or for adding grip where your board has none, such as the nose for a dog or a passenger.

Thicker foam for knees and fishing setups

OCEANBROAD 6mm Boat Flooring

OCEANBROAD’s faux-teak EVA flooring is made for boats, but it works as a thick mat on a paddle board. At 6mm it’s about twice as thick as most SUP deck pads, so it’s noticeably more cushioned if you kneel, sit or stand still for long stretches. The V-groove surface is designed to drain water and grip wet or dry.

It’s sold in 48”-long sheets in several widths (16.8” to 45.6”). It’s the most-reviewed product on this page, with around 1,700 ratings at 4.2 stars, mostly from boat owners.

A small grip pad for your dog’s spot

Drydiet Dog Traction Pad

Dogs slide around on a bare nose, and their claws can scratch a hard board. This Drydiet set is about 21” x 12.6” overall, made of four diamond-pattern EVA pieces with printed paw prints, and it peels and sticks like any deck pad. You can trim it to fit your board’s nose.

It’s a newer product, with around 70 Amazon ratings at 4.0 stars at the time of writing, so treat it as a simple, cheap fix rather than a proven favourite.

Who it suits: paddlers taking a dog out on a board without grip on the nose. See how to paddle board with a dog for training tips.

How to choose a paddle board mat

Kit, sheet or roll?

Things worth checking:

Inflatable boards: most come with a deck pad already, and stick-on pads are designed mainly for hard boards. If you want to add one to an inflatable, check with your board’s maker first, as adhesives and seams on PVC can be fussy.

How to fit a stick-on deck pad

  1. Clean the deck. Remove all wax and dirt, then wipe it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry. See how to clean a stand up paddle board.
  2. Dry-fit first. Lay the pieces out with the backing still on and mark their positions with masking tape.
  3. Apply in warm conditions. Adhesive bonds better at room temperature or above than in a cold garage.
  4. Peel a little at a time. Start at one edge and press down as you go to avoid air bubbles.
  5. Press hard, then wait. Roll or press firmly over every piece and give it a day before you take the board out.

FAQ

What is a paddle board deck pad made of?

Almost all are closed-cell EVA foam: soft, light and doesn’t soak up water. It’s the same material used on most inflatable SUP decks.

Can you put a deck pad on an inflatable paddle board?

You can, but most inflatables already have one, and stick-on pads are designed for hard boards. Check with your board’s maker before sticking anything to the PVC.

How do you remove an old deck pad?

Warm it with a hairdryer to soften the adhesive, then peel slowly from one corner. Clean any leftover glue off with an adhesive remover that’s safe for your board’s finish before fitting a new pad.

Do I need a mat for paddle board yoga?

On most inflatables the built-in pad is enough. On a hard board, a bigger or thicker pad makes poses more comfortable. Our best paddle boards for yoga picks all have large deck pads.
